Caring for your hand tie-dyed pieces

There’s something beautifully imperfect about hand tie dye.

Unlike mass-produced fabrics that are dyed by machines, traditional hand tie dye is a slower, artisan process. The colours are layered, washed and dried by hand, creating the rich depth and character that makes these pieces feel so special.

Because of this traditional process, your garment needs a little extra care during its first few wears.

Why does tie dye run?

It's completely normal for hand-dyed fabrics to release a small amount of excess dye during their first few washes.

This isn't a fault—it's simply part of the traditional dyeing process. The vibrant colours that make each piece so striking can continue to release small traces of pigment until the fabric has settled.

This is especially common with deeper shades such as indigo, charcoal, navy, emerald and rich berry tones.

Our care guide

To keep your garment looking beautiful for years to come, we recommend:

• Hand wash separately for the first 2–3 washes.
• Use cool water and a gentle detergent.
• Avoid soaking your garment for long periods.
• Do not use bleach or harsh stain removers.
• Gently squeeze out excess water rather than wringing.
• Dry naturally in the shade to help preserve the colour.
• Once the excess dye has settled, your garment can usually be washed with similar dark colours on a delicate cycle if preferred.

Helping your colours stay beautiful

A few simple habits can make all the difference:

• Turn your garment inside out before washing.
• Wash only when needed rather than after every wear.
• Avoid tumble drying where possible.
• Store away from prolonged direct sunlight.
• Steam instead of using a very hot iron to protect both the fibres and the colour.

Like your favourite pair of vintage jeans, hand-dyed clothing develops character over time. The gentle softening of the fabric is all part of its charm.
