ABOUT US

Who We Are

The Global Bohemian is a UK based sustainable business that creates clothing from up-cycled and reclaimed fabrics. We work with two artisan partners in both Bali and India to create our designs. Our brand was born from a love of culture, clothing and the planet. It was seeing the impact of fast fashion in the west on countries like India that created a need to try and address this in some way. We hope that by adding sustainable clothing into the market we can help support the planet in a small, but hopefully, impactful way.

Why Choose Us

We create clothing from fabric that would have otherwise gone to landfill and rescue it. We base our designs on free, flowing eastern inspired designs as well as seventies styles that symbolise love and peace. Our clothing is always designed to be as free sized as it can be - because we don't like snug clothes! And, we work closely with partnerships in both these countries to ensure that the whole supply chain is ethically produced and paid fairly.

Our Commitments

We run our business under the guidance of three main areas: People, Planet and Place. Our commitments in these areas mean we strive to do the best we can for each of them.

People includes both the people we work with in other countries as well as our customers. We do this by paying on time, paying the right price and communicating in a professional and honest way. We strive to answer all our customer queries and listen to all feedback - because your opinion matters to us. We also use start-up companies where we can rather than large corporates such as our shipping supplier who manages our international shipping - because we believe in supporting other small businesses in our own country.

Planet means we source and produce ethically from the kantha blankets we use that are created by rural artisans to the processes used in our suppliers factories. Our packaging is fully recyclable and comes from a local source so it has less to travel and we use cotton and card clothing tags - no plastic here!

Place is about how we support local artisans to make a living from their own skills. We don't negotiate on price when it comes to what we pay cost for our designs and samples. We also strive to make an impact in our own home city by collaborating with other local businesses and sharing them on social to raise awareness - because we understand the difficulties small businesses face.

WHAT IS KANTHA

What is Kantha Fabric

Kantha fabric is a traditional Indian textile known for its distinctive running stitch embroidery. Originating from West Bengal and Bangladesh, it was historically made by layering old saris and stitching them together to create lightweight, quilted cloths. Each piece is hand-stitched by artisans using colourful threads, giving it a unique, textured appearance. Today, Kantha is celebrated for its artistry and sustainability — every fabric tells a story through its visible handwork and repurposed materials, making each garment one-of-a-kind.

How Do We Source Our Kantha

Our kantha is from the rural region of West Bengal, where generations of artisans have passed down this age-old embroidery technique. Our kantha supply comes directly from a small village and is provided by women who create them from their own homes - its then paid for by our supplier before being shipped to our partners in Rajasthan. Every Kantha piece from these communities reflects a story of heritage, artistry, and sustainable slow fashion.

What Will the Quality of My Kantha Piece Be Like

Kantha fabric is a true celebration of upcycling. Each piece is made by layering together reclaimed cotton saris, then hand-stitched with thousands of tiny running stitches to create a unique quilted texture. Over time, these saris may have small patches or areas where artisans have stitched over worn spots — these details aren’t flaws, but part of the fabric’s story. Every patch and stitch reflects care, creativity, and a second life given to old textiles. The result? A one-of-a-kind piece with visible history, character, and soul — the essence of slow, sustainable fashion.

How Do I Care For Kantha

We suggest handwashing and drying on the line (in summer) to keep the fabric in the best condition. In the winter you could dry on the radiator. Of course, if you want to use the machine opt for a delicate cycle and wash by itself. Be aware that the running stitch is delicate and it can easily be caught on nails and claws so be careful when dressing or cuddling your fluff's!

WHAT IS VINTAGE SILK

What is Reclaimed Vintage Sari Silk

The sari fabric we use is soft, lightweight, and often features intricate patterns, vibrant colours, and luxurious textures. Because we work with recycled materials, every collection is designed around the colours and prints available at the time making every drop completely one-of-a-kind. We use two types of sari fabric; recycled vintage and crepe sari fabric. Crepe fabric has hand embroidered detail on and was a more lux fabric than the normal vintage fabric. We also further up-cycle these in some cases to include tie dye over the top creating a truly magical piece of clothing.

How Do You Source the Sari Fabric

Our vintage reclaimed fabrics come from across India, particularly from rural communities where sari recycling is part of a long-standing tradition. These saris are then passed to our female-led team of makers where they are hand-cut, reworked, and sewn into beautiful, modern bohemian fashion pieces. Each piece you purchase supports sustainable fashion, female artisans, and ethical production.

Is it 100% Silk

Yes it is. As each sari is sourced from across India they will be different grades and textures so some will feel heavier and softer than others. They are all 100% reclaimed.

How Do I Care For Silks

Handwashing would be best fir these fabrics as some of the layers can be prone to catching or pulling. We'd suggest drying naturally on a hangar - with them being silk they don't take long to dry! Don't iron them. If you hold a handheld steamer then you can do that. In fact, if you don't own a steamer we highly recommend one - their uses are endless!

STYLING & SIZING

Why Don't Use Stock Traditional UK Sizes

We try to keep our clothes as free sized as possible so they are flowing and easy to wear - iconic of the seventies bohemian style. Each style has its own measurements and we also recommend a UK size fit. We work with adjustable waists either by shirred waistlines or by cinching in - and some styles are classed as oversized. We're always releasing new styles so if something doesn't fit now we will have a new style in-coming that will.

Can Your Clothing Be Worn All Year Round

We create clothing that can be layered easily. We believe in making our wardrobes go further so we create styles that are easy to wear over layers or under layers. Our Nomad Tunic and Peace Lily Mini are perfect examples of styles that layer perfectly from summer to winter.

Are Your Clothes Reversible

Many of our kantha styles can actually be worn both ways and also include button features and pockets on both sides so that you get two styles in one! Our Epona Duster actually includes internal pockets on one side and external pockets when its reversed. We also put a small trim around when they reverse to neaten up the edges and create a structured look.

How Can I Style Your Clothing

Our designs are made to wear over or with something else or solo. Our Nomad Tunic looks great over a pair of your favourite flares or even your favourite leggings. Our Sita Robe and Danu Dress are made to be worn solo and be the talking point they are. When we started this brand we wanted to design clothing that could liven up a black outfit, something that would give a pop of colour and be unique to you. That's why we style our models in black sometimes to show how versatile kantha and sari fabric really is when you pair them together. We believe in complementing patterns and fabrics - not clashing. If you join our Instagram page you'll see how we style our models and how our community styles our designs.

Does Your Clothing Fit All Body Types

We use various models to show that our clothing fits all types from curvy to straight, to short and tall. Our brand is aimed at women who covet individuality and our choice of model shows that depending on your body type and individual style you can wear our clothes. For example; Icey who models for us has a classic curvy shape and a more subtle look so we show her wearing the clothes to add a little pop of uniqueness to her style whereas Miz is more eclectic in her own style and has a different body type so when we shoot her we are a little more outrageous and figure hugging. It shows how versatile our clothing can be!
