Meet the Folk Waistcoat

Meet the Folk Waistcoat

Our newest addition: The Folk Waistcoat

Meet the newest addition to The Global Bohemian: the Folk Waistcoat. Created especially for festival season, she's bold, colourful, artisan stitched and made to be worn on repeat.

We're always drawn to fabrics that tell a story in every stitch. While our Suzani is made from new fabric rather than vintage textiles, it's still embroidered by hand using traditional techniques – and that's exactly why we fell in love with it.

Suzani is steeped in heritage. It's a celebration of craftsmanship, of hand embroidery that refuses to blend into the background, and of textiles that feel as individual as the hands that created them.

At The Global Bohemian, we're always searching for fabrics with soul. Textiles that honour the makers behind them and preserve skills that have been passed down through generations. Suzani is one of those special finds, and we're proud to bring it into our collection.

What is Suzani?

The word Suzani comes from the Persian word suzan, meaning "needle" – a fitting name for a textile celebrated for its intricate hand embroidery.

Although Suzani is traditionally associated with Central Asia, its distinctive embroidery techniques have travelled across borders over the years. Today, skilled artisans in India continue to produce beautifully embroidered Suzani fabrics, keeping these traditional methods alive while adding their own craftsmanship to every piece.

Our Suzani fabrics are sourced in India through our artisan partners before being transformed into handcrafted waistcoats. Each embroidered textile is carefully chosen by hand, and rather than creating large production runs, we make just two or three waistcoats from each piece of fabric to ensure as little goes to waste as possible.

The meaning behind the stitching

One of the things we love most about Suzani is the symbolism woven into every design.

You'll often spot blooming flowers representing beauty and new beginnings, winding vines symbolising growth, circular sun motifs celebrating warmth and energy, and leafy patterns that reflect the natural world. Together they create textiles that feel joyful, expressive and full of life.

In many ways, that's exactly what The Global Bohemian has always been about.

Celebrating nature, celebrating craftsmanship and creating clothing by hand rather than through mass production. Every stitch tells a story, and that's something we'll always champion.

From fabric to Folk Waistcoat

I've wanted to introduce Suzani into our collections for a long time. I've always been drawn to its intricate embroidery, vibrant colours and the way no two pieces ever feel quite the same. It felt like the perfect fabric to create something completely new.

The Folk Waistcoat is the first of several Suzani designs we'll be introducing, with an exclusive collection arriving later this year.

Suzani won't become one of our core everyday fabrics. Instead, it'll remain something a little more special. Small runs, limited editions and one-off designs that appear when inspiration strikes.

Our love affair with saree fabrics isn't going anywhere. Saree textiles are, and always will be, at the heart of The Global Bohemian. They're where this journey began, and they'll continue to be the foundation of our collections. Suzani simply gives us another beautiful way to celebrate artisan craftsmanship alongside them.

The nitty gritty of the design

The Folk Waistcoat was designed with festival season in mind, but we wanted it to be much more than a one-weekend piece.

It needed to be timeless. Something that packs easily into your festival rucksack, layers effortlessly over the clothes you already own and becomes the piece you reach for every summer.

We gave it a cropped fit, finished it with natural wooden toggle fastenings and added an adjustable metal back belt so you can wear it loose or cinch it in for a more tailored shape.

Style it over a floaty dress, wear it on its own with denim shorts and cowboy boots, or throw it over flares for a full bohemian moment. However you wear it, it's designed to work with your wardrobe rather than replace it.

Available in rich greens, soft whites, vibrant reds, playful pinks and bold blues, Suzani has a way of making unexpected colour combinations feel completely effortless. Earthy green paired with bright pink? Somehow it just works.

And isn't that exactly what bohemian style is all about?
